Located in London, the British Museum is a hallmark that symbolizes human history and culture. There are over seven million different valuable items stored in the museum and it is easily one of the largest museums in the world. These objects belong to almost all the parts of the world, and truly stand as a story that tells us our origins and the journey to our current era. The museum is funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and it is a non-departmental public institute in Britain.
The initial history of the museum can be first credited to the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and scientist. The museum was first opened for the masses on 15th January 1759, and displayed most of his collections, at the Montagu house in Bloomsbury. The site is still the same even today. However, to cope with the increasing number of display items and expansion, several different branches have now been formed. These include the British Museum of Natural History in South Kensington established in the year 1887. Until 1997, the same building was used for the museum and the British national library. Mr. Neil MacGregor is the seat holding museum director through 2001 till date.
The museum is open to all the visitors during working hours at no entrance fees whatsoever. However, at times the visitors have to pay some fee in case there is a special exhibition being displayed.
This museum is the encyclopedia of human nature, human history, and human art, established almost 250 years ago. The old texts, manuscripts and books, along with the natural history items are currently displayed at the British Library, in a separate building. The number of items displayed in the museum has steadily risen to a huge number. Today, the museum accommodates almost over 13 million objects at the British Museum, seventy million at the Natural History Museum and 150 million at the British Library.
After a visit to the museum, take some time to explore the greater area of London. Make sure you Find a central London hotel in Kensington with convenient access such as Copthorne Tara Hotel London.Hotel options for your accommodation include a wide range of economy to luxury hotels, and most of the hotels will arrange your transportation and itinerary on request.
